EPDM: Moosgummi and sponge rubber profiles

Cellular rubber (also called Moosgummi) and sponge rubber are foamed profiles made of EPDM rubber. The difference lies in the cell structure. Cellular rubber has closed cells filled with inert gas. Sponge rubber has open cells that are interconnected. Both materials are extruded and therefore have a closed skin. The profiles are used as sealing strips. Cellular rubber is also available with single-sided self-adhesive backing. Both materials can be ordered per meter or on rolls of 5 and 10 meters.

Need help finding the right Moosgummi or sponge rubber profile?

Choose the correct profile based on the width (a) and thickness (b) you need. For fixed profiles (3010 to 7515), you can directly order the roll with the correct length.

For other profiles, specify the required number of meters or a 25-meter roll. Are you unsure which size you need or are you looking for a different dimension? Please feel free to contact us.

What is the difference between cellular rubber and sponge rubber?

  • Cellular rubber (Moosgummi) is a foamed material (EPDM) consisting of gas-filled closed cells, which are not interconnected.
  • Sponge rubber is a foamed material with open cells, which are interconnected.

Both cellular rubber and sponge rubber are extruded and therefore both have a closed skin. However, due to their different cell structures, they behave differently when compressed: sponge rubber, with its open, interconnected cells, is highly and extensively compressible. Cellular rubber, due to its closed cells, can only be compressed up to a certain percentage. If this is exceeded, the cells can burst, and the material loses its properties.

What is EPDM?

EPDM is a synthetic rubber made from petroleum. The abbreviation stands for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer. The material is obtained by polymerization of three monomers.

Properties of EPDM

  • Temperature range from -35°C to +120°C
  • Good resistance to many bases, acids (including fatty acids) and salts
  • Resistance to ozone and UV radiation
  • Long lifespan
  • High elasticity (up to 400%)

Where are Moosgummi or sponge rubber profiles used?

Sponge and cellular rubber are used in refrigeration technology, among other things, as a sealing strip for sealing cold room doors, sliding doors, proofing cabinet doors, and the like, especially for cold and freezer rooms. Compared to rubber profiles, this material is more flexible, allowing it to effectively bridge larger gaps.

Self-adhesive cellular rubber

We offer single-sided self-adhesive cellular rubber in various widths and thicknesses, per meter or on rolls of 5 and 10 meters. These are specially selected for the refrigeration industry. Are you looking for a different dimension? Please contact us via our contact form.

Frequently asked questions about Moosgummi and sponge rubber profiles

Normal rubber, also called solid rubber, has no chambers or cells. It has a continuous, dense material structure. Cellular and sponge rubber, on the other hand, are foamed materials. They contain numerous small chambers (cells) within the rubber, which makes the material lighter and more flexible than solid rubber.

Yes, we offer single-sided self-adhesive cellular rubber in various widths and thicknesses, per meter or on rolls of 5 and 10 meters.

EPDM has good resistance to many bases, acids (including fatty acids) and salts, and is resistant to ozone and UV radiation. The material has a temperature range of -35°C to +120°C.

That depends on the profile. Self-adhesive cellular rubber with tape is available in fixed lengths of 5 and 10 meters. Without double-sided tape, Moosgummi and sponge rubber profiles can be ordered per meter or on a full roll, typically 25 meters.
